Visibility thru Wrong Lens

.
'Radio Mirchi' RJ Suchitra has gone to places, within the period of last 2 years. Her name is a well-known one nowadays, similar to those of the satellite channels' VJs. She is regularly wooed by film personalities to involve in some of their projects. Just recall her cameo in Madhavan's 'JJ' as a RJ itself in the beginning of a song. She has also sung few songs in 'Laysa Laysa' (Ennai Polave), 'Kaakha Kaakha' (Uyirin Uyire), 'Punnagai Poovae' (Venus Venus Pennae), 'JJ'(May maadham ..., the Reema-sen item number)'Manmathan' (Remix song) etc.,

But, being a personality who had reached the dizzy heights, she is facing the consequences. Eventhough, her performance is lively & different from the regular AIR (All India Radio) RJs, some of her deliveries had irked few. I read a listener's (AM.Anandhan, Chennai-44) view in his letter to 'Junior Vikatan' recently, in which he has expressed his agony over a programme of that particular day. The following is the extract of that letter.

"...RJs think that all the jokes which they crack amuse everyone. But it doesn't actually. Last week there was a programme in 'Radio Mirchi'. The programme was about some crazy questions from the RJ & the blunt replies from listeners.

That day's RJ Suchitra's question was 'Why certain unemployed Engg. grads are not getting jobs? What can they do?'. Being an unemployed Engg grad, I was glued so much to the programme.....expecting some good suggestions.

..unfortunately, the entire programme had hurt my feelings. One Pvt.Engg. college's female student replied that "Unemployed male Eng. grads waste their time by watching Porn movies. If they don't get jobs, they can go to Marina beach to sell peas and can distribute newspapers door to door". Suchitra had acknowledged & appreciated that reply and conveyed that it is a good suggestion for unemployed grads. Since I was so frustrated with the way it was going, I switched it off......and continued with my work.

RJs.... pl. motivate the youth, if you are capable of doing it. Otherwise, as usual, pl. ask stupid questions like 'Have you finished your dinner? Which movie did you watch?' or conduct debates on "the best side dish for the main course - Chutney or Podi?". Pl. don't break our 'weak' hearts like this....."

I could feel the pain of that guy..... Suchitra might have thought of discussing a topic with fun. But, she had hurt some people's sentiments like this, unintentionally. But, it happens in the life. If people go up in the ladder and make themselves visible to all others surrounding them, they will be well noticed for their comments and activities. So, they need to watch their acts and words, carefully. Nowadays, I am also posting on certain issues very carefully, since I am getting sharp comments highlighting few issues.....Does it mean that , I am making myself visible???? :-) :-) :-)

Just another spark....
Sometime back, in Singapore Mediacorp English FM, two RJs landed in a controversy when they suggested some sexual remarks to one of the listeners who came on line (they were suggesting as to how to handle his girlfriend). The local media and the public condemned it so much and the Radio station also took action against them. I believe that the arrogance, Slip of the tongue talks, the hosting status etc., are few reasons behind these kind of controversies, which the RJs should take note of & avoid.

I hope Radio MIRCHI comes online in the NET. I just fell in love with that station when I visited India in 1993 December.

Everyone learns by mistakes. It is life. One man's food is another man's poison. Anyways, Suchithra IMHO is a great DJ.

Mirchi Suchi is good....her voice has this boyish tinge to it. She speaks lots of Tanglish.

I don't think any of Chennai's FM channels are avlbl online. I had checked this out sometime earlier.

Hi Ram. Good post. I listen to FM radio almost 2 - 4hours every day. Perhaps the anguished listener has taken things too much to heart. Maybe he's right. Sometimes, RJ's do get carried away. But that said, Suchi is one of the best...her voice, attitude and topical programming is one of the best there is!

I liked the station when I went to Madras.

The suggestion was from one small portion of the audience and if she hadnt supported that opinion, then it would have been fine (Of course the opinion itself was very narrow-minded).

Ram,

I will not certainly agree with this. It is the way you look at things.

Let us look at this from each of their perspective (Suchitra, the caller and the listener)

What Suchitra could have done? She should not have asked such a serious question, as the FM channel is there only to provide fun and entertainment and some times information’s like ‘Where, What and When’. All that she could have done after posing such a question is that she should have cautioned the callers to be sensible enough and as well be humane. After failing to do so she should have at least shut off the caller who made the rude remarks.

Why the caller commented so? Probably she would have had worst experience with guys, she could have been morally humiliated while she traveled in a bus, and train etc or she would have had friends who are so. There could be more such reasons. Probably that is why she spoke so.

About the listener: I would like to ask him why did he switch on Mirchi? Is it to get information on how to get a job, what all he can do to get a job? Stupid, I would call him so. He might have switched on to hear all the latest songs and Suchitra’s voice. He should have known that it an entertainment media and not to find his life there.

By saying so I don’t support Suchitra, but I would say every one has their part on it, not only to blame others. I would like end with the comment from Narayanan “One man's food is another man's poison.”

I agree with your views and I would also like to step into their shoes.

Suchi should hv watched her words before agreeing to the student's reply. She should not hv answered that way, as she agrees with viewers on other funny issues. But, it comes out sometimes by slip of the tongue. I hv that experience even at home (!!!)

That Female student's reply may be her perception and may be true to herself. So, no arguments.

But I don't agree on your third point. Every desperate guy in this world needs a comfort somewhere. So, this guy might hv wanted to hear some soothing voice & songs when he had a disturbing mind. He might hv entered the radio at a wrong time and had bitten the 'mirchi' when it was hot.

Since the question was framed on his current status, he might hv expected a suggestion. But definitely, at the time of switching on the radio that might not hv been his expctn. (I mean, suggestion for life). By the end, he had bitten the hot 'mirchi'.

well I think the individual was right in his own ways. One cannot make a mockery of a topic as serious as unemployment. People switch on radios to listen to good music and maybe some wisecracks from the RJs... But not things that tend to hurt them.

If the intent is to create an atmosphere of fun, then RJs should stick to topics that relate to fun and only fun. There was an entire program on Toilets... Well she did make few ppl feel disgusted, but silly remarks on such stupid subjects don;t tend to hurt.

Have you heard of the Steena Story ? That's the heights an RJ can take his programs to...

Suchi should pay heed to such feedback.

I think I would agree with வெங்கட் 's comments (sorry cant read tamil)

When people are going through a problem, whatever it might be, sometimes they expect everyone ard them to be sensitive.

Its a question of perception. No matter what you do or what happens, lots of people will have lots of things to say.If you are going to let every single thing that every person says affect you, then I think life will be very diffcult.

Radio Mirchi shd not have been the place for the listener to be lookin for solutions on how to solve his unemployment problem. No matter how frustrated he was he shd realise that just about any1 and everyone might call in to give their views, some might be good, others just for fun.

I think in life its very important to realise what information we shd take in, act on and what we shd let go....

Suchi is getting boring these days IMO! She is brilliant yeah, but her voice and modulation are getting monontonous these days...din have the impact which it did.

And as for such pgms...I dunno why somebody looks for valuable suggestions at such places! They are meant to "kalaasify" and thats all they do...agreed, they can give valuable suggestions..but that has never been the case! Probably the listener is not used to these.

I dont get to hear suchi much, but I got to see her program on Vijay TV and she seemed quite level headed and not as offhand remarking type.
Anyways, I think the listener who switched off got hurt on a wrong note....to me it appeared that suchi was appreciating the dignity of labour and not trying to hurt any sentiments.....well, people think in different ways.
Blogging is by itself a system wherein you express your views visibly with an expectation of responses/comments, so it is implied that criticisms/appreciations are likely to come..........

Hmmm... is the quality of Suchi goin down these days?? I was a fan of her programs when i was in India. Couldnt believe she had actually made a mockery of unemployment even though the person calling had done so.

Hope suchi learns from the mistake!
