Ghajini - Review

The first show experience, after a long gap.... and an evening show on a working day, for the first time. It was a different risk, eventhough we knew the synopsis of the movie. The faith reposed on AR.Murugadoss-Surya combination was the reason behind that attempt.

The pair didn't fail me. The Rs.8 crore project starts in a gripping pace.

You like it or not, you need to start with Nayanthara, the medical student, only. Her intention of taking up the case of a STML (Short term Memory Loss) patient for her project gets thwarted by her superior, citing several reasons.

There he enters... our hero Sanjay (Surya) afflicted with STML - who remembers incidents only for the next 15 minutes. The past & the reasons behind his current status, unfold thru Sanjay's diaries of few years back.

Sanjay Ramasamy, the multi billionaire and the model Kalpana (Asin) meet in a comical situation. Without even knowing his true status, she starts loving him when he proposes. Each & every meeting of theirs was a hilarious - romantic - sentimental - gripping ones. Due to some revealing facts, Kalpana becomes a target for the villain Pradeep Ravath. Result.. Sanjay gets hit badly, while Kalpana gets killed.

With his ST memory and the photos which he carries, he kills his targets, behind his ladylove's death except the main villain. There is another twist brought out here in the form of Villain's dual role, which is new to Kollywood. And the climax, is as everybody knows.. But after their death, Sanjay is let loose and goes on his way...

Surya lives as Sanjay, both as a billionaire (with that simple smile) and as a violent patient with STML. The romantic scenes with Asin are very touchy and Asin has impressed us a lot. Even at the final moment, her eyes talk. She shares the credit with Surya for both their excellent performances. She gets killed without even knowing Sanjay's actual status, which is one of the highlights in the screenplay.

Nayanthara needs to look after her weight. She has become the potential candidate to beat Namitha. Her attire and makeup in 'X macchi' were glaring so much and at times her expressions are scary to us - managable, since the movie is a thriller(!!). I am just wondering about her pairing with Simbu in 'Vallavan' and Jeeva in 'E'. For her weight and height, they may look like her younger brothers.

Pradeep Ravath is menacing in his role.

Filming of Harris Jeyaraj's songs are good. 'Ragathulla..' comes just as an introductory song (MTV style) to Asin in which she fails to impress. But later, she was convincing in the story and the other 3 songs.

'Oru maalai ...' sung by Karthik has been beautifully picturised with a nice choreography. Wow.. there is such a big difference between Surya's dance movement in 'Nerukku Ner' and in 'Ghajini'. However his dance movements in my favourite number 'Suttum vizhi sudare..' looked funny at times. For this melody, the lead pair could have simply walked instead of dance movements.

The placement of the filler song 'Rangola..' should have happened earlier than where they had fit in. Eventhough it is a dream song, we realise the danger awaiting her (Kalpana - Asin). So, that tension may not allow you to enjoy the song fully.

Strengths
1) The pace of the movie. Slick Editing by Antony and the cinematography by R.D.Rajasekar is keeping up the fast pace. (Both were part of Goutam Menon's 'Kakka Kakka' as well)
2) Surya and Asin are too good in their roles and they have lived as Sanjay & Kalpana. Most of their meetings are fun-filled / romantic except the last tensed moments.
3) Nice picturisation of songs.
4) Since I have not seen 'Memento', I wasn't under any influence and could see it from a layman's angle. Murugadoss' screenplay has made the story simplified inspite of some glitches, with only five characters - Surya, Asin, Nayanthara, PS Ravath and Manobala (as Asin's modelling director)
5) Less violent shots (eventhough more stunts by Kanal Kannan) and less glamour would make it watchable for all ages.

Weaknesses
1) Couldn't believe that Kalpana or her boss, are unaware of such a big shot Sanjay from Tamilnadu, till the last moment of hers.
2) Except, the investigating police officer Riyaz khan (who dies later accidentally), no other police officers' help is sought after in the movie. Especially, when there was a tensed moment in the climax hostel campus. [inspite of today's mobile era. Probably the director would have extended the Anna university ban to the medical college hostel also... :-) :-)]
3) There is no justification for the twist created in the Villain's dual role. Just a screenplay twist... The director could have exploited this twist in a better way for the story.
4) The climax could have been little more convincing.

Inspite of my perception as above, this movie seems to be a hat-trick from Murugadoss (after 'Dheena' & 'Ramana') and a good break for Surya. Asin has proved her place in this part of the world. I believe, Surya who had taken the Chennai distributorship and telugu rights, would definitely make a killing with this action packed flick.

While coming out of the hall, my son asked for the logic of naming the movie as 'Ghajini'. I couldn't find any, from the storyline. Can someone help?

Ghajini Review by SIFY & Indiaglitz are also linked. Glad that this time all of us had reviewed on the same lines, which was not in case of 'Anniyan'.

Good review Ram. While like TTG, I know what the title stands for, I still think they wanted a name sounding like that of Superstar so that with the stupendous success of CM, they could ride on the coattails of his popularity (because of not just Surya being in the cast but the name itself having the draw of the curious) :-)

Good review. I have seen "Memento" and I can already see traces of it here ( But memento was a very complex movie since the story ran in reverse ). Will try to see Ghajini . I like Surya (and Asin too hehe).

Memento is a wonderful but complex movie. Our tamil audience cant understand had Ghajini been taken in the same lines of Memento..

In Memento scenes will be ordered like 10,9,8,7,and so on in contrast to a regular movie where scenes will flow 1,2,3,4. U can undersand scene 10 only after u see 9

Aneways Ghajini shld be a nice attempt and ur review further kindles interest to watch ;)

Ram,

Thanks for the review. Hv 2 catch this soon. Overall it looks like a hit from the Surya-Murugadoss camp. You said that it is a hat-trick from Murugadoss. Ramana was a hit. How about Dheena? IMO it was not a big grosser.

Saranyan.. welcome

Mr.Narayanan.. Pl. don't go for it, with so much expectations about your first aspect.
I felt she was better in 'Ayyah' eventhough she paired with Sarath. During the last few months, I believe she has bloated a lot....

Deepak.. i agree. But, that was the knot which I was looking for in the movie, which I couldn't find. Nowhere, it is told that he has tried several times to kill those people.

Thennavan.. i agree. the name also plays its part in pulling the crowd in.

Cogito.. Definitely you'll love Asin.

Gayatri.. enjoy the movie by the weekend. Definitely it won't be a let down.

LXSN.. Your comment kindles my interest to look for 'Memento' CD now... thanks for dropping by.

Kaps.. Eventhough 'Dheena' resembled 'Thalapathi', Murugadoss got noticed for his first venture - due to the tight screenplay.

Eventhough, I may not call it a super hit it was not a bad movie like the other Ajith movies which got released at that time. (compare with 'RED'!!!)

happy to note the interest u hv for cinema.......i should really appreciate your eagerness in bringing the best out of you.

the time, money, effort put in these ventures may bring joy to you and others...well......is it a long lasting one? pl think......

it is going to be noteworthy if you analyse vinayagar agaval, kandar anuboothi, shashti kavasam, abhirami anthaathi, kanakadaara, quaran, bible verses etc. and come up with raving reviews.

ram, cinema is the major distraction towards leading a spiritual, simple and calm life. we, human beings are created with a purpose beyond these worldly things.

at the end of the day, you may be crowned with 'Cinema Thanthai/Thaai' or 'Review King'..r u looking only for this?

instead of asking 'Why Gajini?' just ask yourself once 'Who am I?'

the intention is definitely not to offend or to hurt. just a opinion from a simple guy.

PK

thanks for sharing your views.. i don't feel offended, if I have to write it openly. I welcome these sort of comments as well, definitely.

As you had mentioned, these sort of posts need more time and efforts (eventhough not money) and the output doesn't serve the purpose. I agree.

I also agree that cinema has become a distracting media -but not as worse as Televisions. But the perception differs from person to person. Even today, I see more people like you who devote much time to spiritual issues other than the distracting media. I welcome that.

All these type of diversional activities like blogging, reveals the true interests of the individuals. Whatever be the area in which the individual is interested, comes out in a full swing. Eventhough, you had conveyed a good message, I am not confident to write those things what you had mentioned. I would rather say, at this point of time.

Eventhough, I may not be able to contribute 100% to those kind of topics currently, I feel that at some point of time I may do that as well.

Thanks for your suggestions. You are welcome to share your views openly.

Surya / Vatsan.. take ur time.

VJ.. to keep the scenes hilarious and romantic, Murugadoss would have thought that it would be OK to have small glitches like this.

SK.. hope you too will enjoy it. Most of the Net previews had already published the story. So, my review won't make much difference. It is only the execution, which will attract the crowd for this movie even lateron.

Good Review..Now that the plot is out in open...I will have least expectations about the movie..

I still do not understand...Whats the link between the movie and 17 time invader Ghajni...Defies Logic..

the logic is pretty simple...if you watched the movie, surya kills all the baddies first before he does the final killing of laksman

thus the director is trying to convey that, just the 17 time invader ghazni mugal, sanjay would do anything to seek revenge no matter failures comes across his way

and these are two keen observation that i made

do you have any idea why asin was named Kalpana?

well, the director is trying show the world that just like kalpana chawla who sacrificed her life for a scientific mission, the character kalpana dies with dignity, sacrificing her life to protect the women'rights!!

do you also realize that sanjay ws left hander??
this is also another idea sparkled by murugadoss as a part to potray sanjay's brilliance!!

Keerthi.. hope you had seen it and enjoyed it.

Rags.. the storyline was open even before. The execution part is the one which is appreciable. anyhow, you can go with less expectations.. nothing wrong. you may like it finally. I had the same thoughts about naming the movie...

nickesh bharatan.. thanks for your views. Eventhough, I could understand the facts behind real 'Ghajini', still I am not convinced with matching it with storyline delivered now. Probably, Murugadoss would have conceived a different storyline when he decided the name and could have changed it subsequently. Irrespective of the name, the final product has shaped out well.

Romesh.. Nice observation. Could be possible. Thanks for your views.

Aatma.. hope you will also enjoy.

Vinesh.. you won't feel that the money you spent was a waste.. you can go for it.

Sundaresan.. hope you will also enjoy it :-) :-)

arvind :-) :o) thanks

balaji.. Nayan has put too much of weight.. Suryah danced well in 'oru malai' song rather than in 'suttum vizhi' song.

krish.. hope you enjoyed it. anyhow, the climax is part of a tight masala movie. we cannot blame the director as well. that's what the fans need.

anonymous.. the screenplay might have demanded the removal of the Cop - to continue till the end. So, Murugadoss might have decided to eliminiate Riazkhan.

Was it only me - Asin had Revathi's mannerisms in the movie, she looked a little bit like her as well - did you notice it ?

Anony... thankx.. it is possible that ARM.. would have thought on the same lines..

Hari.. I think you are referring to Revathy's earlier ventures like 'Mouna Raagam' 'Punnagai Mannan' 'Kanni Raasi' etc., where she used to come as a naughty vibrant girl... possible that Asin might have expressed in the same way. If you can have a 'Nila' to replace 'Simran' in terms of mannerisms, why not Asin to replace Revathy?.. We have got a quality & pretty actress already.. hope she capitalises it properly to retain her no.1 status now.
