First milestone - 5000 hits!!!!

.
The first milestone has been reached......5000 page hits on the 47th day. Thanks to everyone of you, for enabling me to make it so soon.

Long way to go, isn't it?

When I look back, it is surprising to note that I took this decision 7 weeks ago. Ok.. a separate series of postings will follow on this experience. Let me reserve my thoughts for those posts, which are likely to appear soon.

At this juncture, I would like to thank Jammy & Kaps, who prompted/inspired me to start this blog. Thanks to Thennavan, Chakra, Twin-Gemini, Balaji, Senthil, Narayanan, அடேங்கப்பா!!! Prabhu as well, for the suggestions/links extended in the initial days of blogging. I just wanted to share some of my observations on the statistics recorded. Just extend your views as well...

a) Maximum hits
The maximum no. of hits were received for the following posts.
-- 4600 carats diamond - Thanks to Google & the hoax-loving visitors.
-- Nayanthara - Simbu in Vallavan - Nayan's craze is going high after the controversial ad.
-- Anna University permission for more Pvt. Engg colleges (Post-1 & Post-2 - Thanks to Teakada)
-- Other Cine-searches were mostly on actresses, navel etc., (due to my Oxymorons post and nothing else!!!)

b) Categorisation
If I categorise all my 97 posts during this period, the most no.of comments received from fellow bloggers were for Films & Tamil posts. Eventhough, some mentioned that they couldn't comment on cine posts, it seems the majority likes to comment on those subjects. I love to blog on all, eventhough I am keeping my interests intact on films.

Films / Tv - 34 posts
Tamil - 11 posts
General - 49 posts
Personal - 3 posts

c) Visitor attitude
I observed that 60% of the visitors stay here only for less than 10 secs. It seems, those who are coming here thru search engines are getting disappointed, when they don't get what they search for. (I couldn't help them). Another observation is that 75% of the hits are thru first time visitors (thru other blogs & search engines) and the balance are from those who have become regulars nowadays. I wish the % changes in future, to my favour.

Once again, thank you all to keep this going....Still, it is a long way to go and search for something in that open sky, as in the picture above.

Fruits - Are they keeping us fit or otherwise?

.
During our weekend purchases, this season's fruit captured our attention as usual.... it is nothing but Mangoes from India. As you know, in addition to the 40 degrees plus heat, Mangoes are the next attraction of this summer season, in Tamilnadu. Even in Singapore, Little India area was full of Mango crates of different varieties.

We pocketed few, since this is the end of the season. But the immediate question which hit my mind, was whether it is worth eating?? Whether it is from reliable source?

Reason being, the news article in SUN TV a couple of days back. Several boxes of Mangoes were seized and thrown in Madurai, since the trader was found to have used Calcium-Carbide, to ripen the mangoes.

It would be delicious to taste Mangoes which have gone through the natural processing of riping. But due to commercial reasons and the high demand in the season, traders are sorting to these kind of gimmicks to market the unriped mangoes. They follow the artificial maturation process by keeping small amount of carbide in a paper pocket, inside the Mango crates. Eventhough, this process reduces the time taken for the manoges to ripen, it diminishes the quality and taste. Certain companies are marketing their Mangoes with guarantees that they are sun -ripened on the tree through its full term. (I hope I bought the right one...)

Initially, I thought it is only happening in our state (to my knowledge). Later on, I found out that it is a common trick followed by several Mango growing countries, at international level. Read this article.

Profit-making attitude is entering each and every avenue, nowadays. This Mango industry is not an exception to that rule. But, the ultimate effect is on the quality and flavour of the fruit.

Another news, related to the same quality issue ....Everyone knows about the well known say 'An Apple a Day, keeps the doctor away'. But, can this say retain its glory after few years, in this profit oriented world? If you think that the Apple which you are buying is a fresh one, just reconsider once again... It may look fresh and shiny, but might not have been plucked just few weeks back. Sometimes, it may be 6 months old.

Recently, I read in Junior Vikatan that, in India too many cold-storage facilities have come up everywhere to maintain the freshness of fruits. Due to the seasonal nature of the Apples, the traders are bringing them at the appropriate season and storing there even upto 6 months. In addition to this freshness issue, the acid cleansing for keeping the apples shiny, may affect the quality of the apples if it exceeds the limit. Eventhough, the acid cleansing is followed internationally for polishing the apples(!!!), too much of artificial dressing may affect the ultimate quality.

How much acid used for polishing?

So, what is the limit for these type of artificial processes?

I hope that, the health authorities in India, will lay down some more rules in this respect. They need to keep a constant watch and ensure that the traders in this industry adhere to those health rules, strictly. Otherwise, even the doctors cannot advise their patients to take fruits, confidently. It should not end up like this cycle of

'Health problem > Fruits > Health problem due to the fruits > ???'

Economics of Indian (tamil) Film Industry

.
Thiru Thiru (திரு திரு)
Ayyappasami (அய்யப்பசாமி)
Thaniyae Thannandh Thaniyae (தனியே தன்னந் தனியே)
Mullil Roja (முள்ளில் ரோஜா)

Doesn't the above names resemble some of the upcoming TV serial names in Sun TV or Jaya TV? Your guess may be right.. They may be taken for future yet-to-be-planned serials. But prior to them, our Cine producers have taken movies with these names and released them already.

Are you astonished, since you have not noticed their releases?

I got irked when I went to a video library yesterday evening and observed the display of above VCDs. The reason was that I went there with expectations of some interesting new releases. Pandiarajan was the hero for the first two movies and 'Kolangal' Ajay for the third. I couldn't identify anyone from the fourth one. These are not the only list of movies displayed in that library. I saw some more ......

Ulla-kadathal ('Kutti' Radhika) - உள்ளக்கடத்தல்
GomathiNayakam (Ponnvannan) - கோமதிநாயகம்
Girivalam (Richard, Shaam) - கிரிவலம்
Kadhal FM ('Boys' Manikandan) - காதல் FM
Sindhamal Sitharamal (Abbas)- சிந்தாமல் சிதறாமல்
Gurudeva (Jai Akash) - குருதேவா
Sevvel (Jai Akash) - செவ்வேல்
Macchi (Sivaji's grandson) - மச்சி

In addition, I observed some dubbed movies like 'Yaar Ivaro?' 'Anumaan' etc., It seems, all these were the movies released in the last few months of Year 2005. Some of them might have been observed by you in TV promos. For your info, the following is the list of some more movies which are likely to be added to our Video library soon. They are yet to be released officially.

Amputtu Emputtu Imputtu (அம்புட்டு எம்புட்டு இம்புட்டு)- I saw the trailer of this movie in SUN TV recently. Not sure, if it is a Kannada-dubbed version.
Katrulla Varai (Jai Akash) - காற்றுள்ள வரை
Pathavi Paduthum Paadu (Ranjith) - பதவி படுத்தும் பாடு
Sorry, Enakku Kalyanam Ayiduchu (Sriman, Sornamalya) - Sorry,எனக்கு கல்யாணம் ஆயிடுச்சு

When Oprah Winfrey introduced Aishwarya Rai, in her show couple of weeks back, she briefed about India's cine industry which has surpassed Hollywood in terms of number of movies released annually & number of viewers for those movies. When I heard it, it seemed to be great. But, isn't it a myth?

Out of the so called 150-200 movies (all over India) released every year, only 20% turns out to be hits. Balance are either classified as average grossers or wash outs. Who is the sufferer? Obviously, the producers and distributors. The Technicians & Artists may not be affected so much, monetarily.

Even now, When we go to Chennai, we can observe so many film advt. paintings (like the above unknown names) on all the Compound walls & Bridges (eg.,Doraisamy bridge, Panagal park, Poonamallee High Road etc.,) I used to think as to why these guys are wasting money unnecessarily? Atleast, if they spend it on something else, there is a possibility to have guaranteed returns. But, it is the magic pull of the film industry, which is creating this trap for these guys. They even fall into the financiers' (particularly 'under world') trap and get destroyed by the end of the game. Just recall, the fate of producer GV (Maniratnam's brother), who committed suicide due to the monetary pressure.

The only solace for these guys is that several low budget movies make decent profits in the 'B' & 'C' centres, with which they are happy and the artists as well (like Pandiarajan). Reason is the low investments and several skin-show based stories. (some of the above list had some provocative stills)

The end result is nothing but poorly made movies, which people are forced to watch in 'n' number of satellite channels. Even if they avoided to watch these movies in the theatres, they will be treated by SUN TV advertisements like 'New film, released only few months back now in TV' ('திரைக்கு வந்த சில நாட்களே / மாதங்களே ஆன' அல்லது 'திரைக்கே வராத'). I am allergic to even those advertisements. (sometime back, I remember seeing one ad for a Pandiarajan movie which never saw the theatre lights).

Even in Hindi, there are so many junk movies getting released consistently. All these junk or the small budget movies, are merely the distractions for the position Indian Movie Industry is trying to get in the International arena. Even if our stars get prominence in Cannes film festival or Amsterdam's Tamil Film festival, only the Quality will bring the stature which the Industry is vying for. Not the quantity.

But who cares about the quality? Economics plays the role, since so many people (technicians) are dependent on this glamour industry. When there are so many poor quality Chinese products in the market, I used to compare certain of them with our Indian low quality films. Eventhough, I may not take it.. there are buyers for those products. Till then products (films) will be churned out... It is upto you to decide whether to consume it or not.

Pl. keep speakers on to enjoy sound effects.

Sudoku!! Sudoku!!!

Eventhough this looks like a tamil word, I have not mentioned it in that context.

It is nothing but a mathematical game popular in Japan for a long period. (I don't know the earlier origin....It might have come out of Indian region also centuries back -- optimistic view!!). Now it is gaining popularity everywhere and competing with Crossworld puzzles across the media. Eventhough, it cannot replace puzzles which offer more variety, Sudoku has its own players.

It is simple as well as little bit of time consuming. Do visit the official website of this Japanese game.. or straightway go to the learning mode.

Indeed, a good brain teaser...Keep this another alternative as well, if you are a crossword puzzle guy.

DBI - Next venture on the Young Blood...

.
Last weekend was a long one, since Monday 23-May was a holiday for Vesak day here (Buddha Poornima). It happened so, that I had to watch Prasanth's 'Kannedhirae Thondrinaal' and Vijay's 'Love Today' these days. These movies impressed me even earlier, when I watched for the first time couple of years back. Obviously, they impressed me this time also...

This had prompted me to delegate the investigation work to our DBI team, who impressed me as well as you, fellow bloggers, with their detailed first field report (two weeks back). They started their operation immediately, to find out more on the latest directors who had made a mark in the last few years. Indeed, there were couple of memorable movies in the last few years delivered by these young blood, including those two (KT & LT). Suddenly, we were siezed of the opportunities of seeing their outputs further.

Inspite of their other assignments, our DBI team came out with their findings quickly....

Ravichandran His first movie 'Kanndedhirae Thondrinaal' (Prasanth, Simran, Karan) impressed me a lot. Deva had also composed some hits for that movie (like Easwara, Chinna Chinna kanmani...). The screenplay of that movie was perfect and it was a decent hit for Prasanth at that time. But, what is the use? Ravichandran couldn't materialise that screenplay success in his successive movies. Both his following movies 'Santhitha Vellai' (Karthik in dual role with Kousalya & Roja) and 'Majnu' (Prasanth with Dimple Kapadia's daughter) failed to impress the audience, eventhough the songs of 'Majnu' were hits (Harris Jeyaraj).

He couldn't be located in the newscircle by our DBI team. Any news? Pl. share with us.

Balashekaran 'Love today' was a movie which delivered a different message and portrayed Vijay in a different role. The Director continued his rythm with his subsequent movie 'Thulli Thirintha Kaalam' too (Kushboo, Arunkumar, Karan). It delivered a different message for those unemployed guys sitting on the railway track walls. Kushboo & Karan delivered contained appreciable performances in that movie. After this success, the director moved to Telugu film to deliver some decent hits like 'Priyamain Neeku', 'Ammayi Bagundi' (Remake of 'parthipan kanavu') etc., He is continuing there.

Balashekaran

Will he come back to Kodambakkam, with some of his off-beat themes? Need to wait and watch, if he can get a producer like RB.Choudry again.

Sasi The guy who delivered 'Sollamalae' (Livingston, Kousalya, Karan) followed by 'Roja Koottam' (Srikanth, Bhoomika) is nowhere in the race now. It is a pity that a guy who can deliver two watchable movies (leave apart few extreme portions of 'Sollamalae') couldn't materialise that success later on. I remember reading somewhere recently, that he is trying to make a comeback with a new movie. If at all he comes back, hope he delivers to suit today's audience taste.

Ezhil Eventhough, he delivered few commercial hits like 'Thullatha Manamum Thullum' (Vijay, Simran) 'Pennin Manathai Thottu' (Prabhudeva, Jaya Sheel, Sarathkumar) 'Poovalleam un vasam' (Ajith,Jyotika) etc., his subsequent release 'Raja' (Ajith, Jyotika) didn't click very well in the box office. Now he has released his latest movie 'Amudhae' (Jai Akash, Madumitha) which has received decent reviews. But I don't perceive this film to be a big success in the box office. He needs to put some more efforts with some front-end heroes to stay in the race.

Susi Ganesan His 'Virumbugiraen' was in the can for a long period, before its release. This Prashanth-Sneha (real debut movie for her) starrer didn't impress me that well, due to the disarrayed screenplay. But the director got noticed by the audience, due to Prasanth & Sneha's preformances. Eventhough, this movie got delayed, Ganesan released his next movie 'Five star' earlier to that. With some fine tunes of Anuradha-Sriram couple and the screenplay, this movie had a decent run in the B.O.

Susi Ganesan - 'sweet'u seekiram vennum!!!

Now he is in the news again with his planned movie 'Sakkarai'. Let us see, if he delivers it and sweetens our taste buds with this 'Sakkarai'.

Azhagam Perumal The Assistant Director of ManiRatnam, who acted in 'Alai Payuthaey' (as the drunken house owner of Maddy) impressed the audience very well with his first released movie 'Dum Dum Dum'. This movie produced by Mani gave a good break to everyone involved in that movie like Maddy, Jo, Karthik Raja etc., But the director's unreleased first movie 'Udhaya' (Vijay/Simran) which hit the theatres after 'DDD' and Srikanth starrer 'Jhoot - R U ready' didn't succeed in the B.O. and hence he failed to retain his name gained in 'DDD'.

Alagu - Will he deliver his 'beauty' again?

Now his mentor is planning to give his hand again to AP & Maddy. Will this trio deliver another hit? No probs....We would like to receive the same.

Bharathi 'Marumalarchi' (Mamooty, Devayani) was a fresh & different movie at that time, eventhough the storyline was a common one. Bharathi's screenplay made this movie a success. But his subseqeunt movie 'Maanasthan' (Sarathkumar) didn't earn him a name .. and our DBI team couldn't locate him anywhere now. Is he there somewhere? We don't know....

Karu.Palaniappan A nice screenplay. Fresh air. That's how I felt when Karu.Palam delivered 'Parthipan Kanavu'. This guy who worked with Parthipan, Ezhil, Tharani etc., as assistant, was very good in handling the story. But his next venture 'Sathurangam' (Srikanth, Sonia Agarwal) is yet to see the light.. It seems, the financial problems of this movie is getting over and is likely to be released next month.

kannum 'karu'thumaa ....velai seiyraru...

Will he deliver another good stuff in this 'Sathurangam'? Let us await for a good game in this......

Lingusamy An oneline repeated story of joint family didn't stop Lingu to deliver a successful formula in 'Anandham' (Mamooty, Devayani,Sneha). The way he delievered was unique. He continued the success run in his next movie 'Run' with Maddy & Meera. But, his bad luck got mingled with Ajith's. Their joint venture 'G' which hit the halls few months ago, failed to gain names for both of them.

Lingu - when is the next run??

Now he is planning to direct Vishal ('Chellamae' fame), in a movie to be produced by the hero's dad. Result.. Await his news soon...

******

Since the above list itself was longer enough to munch and we are aware of other young directors' current ventures, we didn't continue our report on Murugadoss ('Dhina', 'Ramana', now doing 'Ghajini'), Sakthi chidambaram (Satyaraj movies always) etc.,

Let us hope that we will be treated by the young blood mentioned above, with some nice movies, in the coming years of Kollywood.

Transition - Where are you now?

.
I always used to feel that the well educated younger generation of current years, cannot stay in one organisation for a long time. I believed that this kind of attitude was mostly prevalent among the Management grads & Software guys. But it is not the case always. Across the industries, change of profile is happening, irrespective of the education. Is it because of the following?

1) Comparison with friends, who are going up in the ladder by jumping from companies to companies.
2) Absorption of different talents, by New Generation companies.
3) Risk-taking at the younger age of 25-35, instead of taking at later stage.
4) Disappearance of the concept of 'Permanent Job' among the Indian Society.

I had personally seen instances, whereby people made moves just because their friends did it. I agree that it is an improving & competitive trend. It pushes the younger generation to try something new to compete with their peers & friends. This attitude has opened up the gates for the growing talents and is aptly supported by the Old as well as New Generation companies.

Risk taking has also increased a lot among the aspiring younger generation. They have realised that only at an earlier stage of the career, they can take the risk of coming across different set of employers, co-employees, profile etc., This has paved the way to increase of the knowledge base and the confidence level, among this generation.

Our previous generation used to be satisfied with a particular job and get settled in it. May be because, at that time permanent job is an important criteria for the so called "settling in life" taboo. Most of our parents might have spent their life in Central-State Govt. jobs / Other PSUs like Railways, Banks etc., It was a prevailing practice for the bride's parents to reconfirm that the grooms have permanent 'Govt. sector/PSU' jobs.

Now those expectations of getting grooms with 'permanent jobs' cannot be fulfilled. Due to the dynamism across the industries & the confidence level among the youth, people do feel that sticking around in a job for more than 'x' no. of years is a criminal mistake. But in future, what will be that 'x' no. of years, for which an employee can stay in one particular organisation?

Once again, it boils down to that person's aspirations, family background, risk taking abilities, Non-wavering thoughts and the opportunities available.

However, I hope it should not be the case as portrayed here.....

I had experienced the above cycle once in my career path and am confident that it may not be the same in future. Have you had this experience at least once in your career?

Must read, along with the above post....

Trying to be adventurous

.
Got a mail from my college hostel mate today..He is working in Chennai now and as usual was grumbling about Chennai weather. We felt that year-by-year the heat is increasing, which has become unbearable nowadays. It was not that bad during our college days in Madurai. Our college had an added benefit of trees, trees, trees & trees everywhere. Being a college of more than 100 years old at that time itself, most of the buildings were old but well maintained.

I was a day-scholar in the first year and during the remaining years, I was staying in the hostel (due to my Dad's shift to Chennai). It was one of the oldest hall in the campus. It used to be square in shape with balconies on both sides of the rooms.. one balcony facing inside empty ground and another balcony facing the outside campus. (the reason for this explanation is coming....)

Front Entrance of our Hall

Being a strict college adhering to disciplines, the hostel rules were also like that. Need to be present in our rooms by 8:30 pm and Study time upto 10pm (!!). Superindents and Wardens may come for round-ups. Then for an hour, a break would be given.. We can sign the book at the hall entrance and go out of the campus -- to taste some of the night delicacies, which are famous in Madurai (Idli, Paratta, etc.,). Eventhough, the hostel life resembled some other environment (!!), I learnt a disciplined life from there...(my wife & son are too vexed sometimes, when I exercise few...!!!)

Eventhough, I used to follow the rules initially, I enjoyed crossing the limits couple of times. I used to go out for movies with friends and returned late in the night. Since the hostel gates would be closed by 11pm, we had to jump into the hostel somehow, thru the outside balconies.. (see the right side of the picture again).

One of the efficient guys (!!) would climb up first and then drop a bedsheet for me to climb up... I had bruised my hands/legs couple of times during these adventures (!!!). I was never caught during these episodes....eventhough, few hostelmates had the experience of going upto the Disciplinary committee on this account.

The Climax was a memorable one..

During the final semester exams, we visited our friend's nearby house for group studies. Sometimes we used to stay in his house, sometimes returned back to hostel in time. His mom used to make nice idlies. Don's ask me, how much I gobbled during my visits!! Just on the penultimate night of my college life...I returned to the college at about 12pm with another friend. While I was approaching my hall, we were noticed by our Superindent... Immediately we skipped the idea of getting into my hall, and went over to another hall located somewhere inside the campus. (there also we jumped over the wall..that's where my friend was put up).

Next day morning, I was called for... and the Supdt. gave a good lecture. The good impression which he had on me earlier, saved me from disciplinary action....that final day.

Otherwise, it would hv been another memorable tale in my not-so-adventurous life....

Pl. enjoy my other related posts as well...

Can this assumption ('Karpanai') work out?

.
Now Harish Ragahavendra is back in the limelight.. Recall some of his fantastic numbers in the last couple of years. His first hit 'Nirpahduvae .." in 'Bharathi' was followed by several other nice songs. Eventhough, he has not sung under AR.Rahman (is there any song???), he was aptly supported by all other young Music directors. Some of his best songs, which really impressed me were...

Yeh..Azhagiya Theeyae (Minnalae)
Poovae Vaai Pesum podhu (12B)
En Nenjil (Dheena)
Mudhar Kanavae (Majnu)
Aagaya Suriyanai (Samurai)
Desingu Raja (Dum Dum Dum)
Vasantha Sena (Shree)
Sakarai Nilavae (Youth)
Mohalai Mohalai (Arasaktchi)
Devathayai Kandean (kathal Kondein)
Manasukullae Thagam (Autograph)
Uyirae Uyirae (Dreams)
Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal (7G Rainbow Colony)
Kannum Kannum thaan (Thirupacchi)

Now the lights are on him again...not because of yet another song. But yet another hero role. His debut venture 'Vikatan', a thriller directed by Arun Pandiyan (with Gayathiri Raghuram) failed miserably to impress the audience. I had watched few scenes of the movie and Harish was able to express well in front of the camera. Too good for an actor.

But he needs something more...What is it?? The 4 letter word....L-U-C-K to be provided by the director & the story!!!! This time he is acting in 'Karpanai' with a new heroine. Eventhough he is very enthusiastic & forthcoming in doing this new role, he has to be helped a lot by the director.

Will this 'Karpanai' work out?

There were so many Singer-turned-actors in the field prior to him. But most of them acted in support roles, with few exceptions. So, they were able to survive in the industry in the acting arena also.

The Singer who really excelled well in acting in the last decade, was SP.Balasubramaniam. He had done a variety of roles and tasted the success there. Just think about his perfomances in Keladi Kanmani, Manathil Uruthi Vendum, Ullasam, Kadhalan, Sigaram, Piriyamanavalae..etc., Fabulous, isn't it? Malaysia Vasudevan too survived in the industry for a long time, with his villain & character roles in few memorable movies like Muthal Vasantham, KathaaNayagan, Poovae Unnakaga etc.,

Eventhough Hariharan acted in a tamil movie POWER (with Kushboo), the movie is yet to be released. We need to see if Hariharan can excel in this new role as well. Apart from them, we know singers like Manickam Vinayagam (Thiruda Thirudi), Mano (Singara Velan), Yugendran (Poovellam Un Vaasam), SPB.Saran (Unnai Saran Adainthaen) who are/were in front of the camera for the last few years. Yugendran & SPB.Saran moved to the small screen since their presence is felt very much there. Good opportunists...

I recently read that the Singer Grace (Seena thaanaa..fame) is also coming in front of the camera, following her husband Karunas. Karunas established himself as a comedy actor. Will his wife do so? Let us see.

(going back to the topic... )

I agree that it is an open stage situation in the dreamfactory. Anyone can come on the stage and prove their talent. But, Harish has to work hard to deliver in this new movie, to survive as an actor. He should not end up doing roles like Sonu Nigam did in Hindi, which didn't go well with the audience.

My best wishes, Harish...Hope you will keep on singing some more memorable songs, inspite of your busy schedule as a hero. Anyhow, singing is your core strength, right... Continue it!!!

Think...Within a Limit

.
For the last couple of weeks, the irritating experience which I am getting is this MS office ad's pop up, whenever I go to Rediff page. Alas... Rediff is my home page. So, the internet explorer starts with these irritating Pop-ups always.

Don't we have some handsome guys and gals to market MS office products? Why should they resort to these Childish monster characters faces for the users? Probably they can make use of these characters, if they launch products targetting the Kids.

I know, there is a say, "Creativity has no ends". But, I believe there is a limit as well, to these kind of weird thoughts.

Time is running out....for the Lady Leads

.
Nowadays, it seems Producers are lining-up in the doorsteps of young heroines (of 10 years back). Is there any change in the trend? Are they not getting dates from the young actresses like Asin, Gopika, Nayan etc? Lucky, these young gals..... they are saved. It seems they are going to get young Moms for their upcoming movies. You can recall, Rohini as a young Mom (For Nayan in 'Ayyah'), Nadhiya & Aishwarya as Moms (For Ravi in 'MK.SO.ML') etc., So, there is no real competition from these young pretty Moms....

This may not stop there...Slowly these actresses are likely to get calls to act as Mom for our heroes as well. The latest news is that Geetha ('Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal' fame) is acting as Vijay's Mom in 'Sivakasi' and Nadhiya may be called in to act as Ajith's Mom in 'Godfather' (what happened to Meena who was supposed to act as Senior Ajith's wife, as publicised initially..the way it is going, I doubt if 'Godfather' will meet the release deadline).

Indeed, a Beautiful Mom

There is a general trend for young actresses to play the aged roles when the character demands .... I mean, in situations like

- the story moving from the young hero's life to his old age (like Soundarya in 'Padayappa', Kushboo in 'Naataamai' / 'Annamalai', Banupriya in Satyaraj movies, Radhika in 'Poonthota Kaavalkkaran', Meena in Sarath's 'Nadodi Mannan' etc.,)

or

-when the hero plays dual roles & both the characters demands young heroines (like Roja in Satyaraj's 'Looty').

The beauty in the dual-role movies is that the hero may be chided by the motherly-young heroine, without creating emotional situations :-( :-( :-( The reason may be the makeup, which the director or the actresses might not hv preferred. So, they end up acting as young mothers with 'white color'ed hair and a thick spectacle.. to bring the old age in front of the screen. The exception I had observed in the last decade was Sukanya's makeup in 'Indian'. The makeup was truly amazing in bringing the old age look for Kamal & Sukanya perfectly.

Apart from the above trend, I observed another trend of making the actresses too old too soon. The same actress who had paired with a hero will get a chance in 10 years time to act as his mother - Guaranteed....!!! (Eventhough the age increases for that hero & that actress at the same time). Is it because the actresses are getting bloated soon after their 3-5 years of stint in the industry? May be or May not be.

This trend is prevailing even from Sivaji era. Recall Mrs.Bandari Bhai who paired with Sivaji in his earlier days movie 'Andha Naal'. She acted as his Mom in several movies after 2 decades. Why should we go to those olden days, to refresh our memory? Take our great Rajinikanth & Kamal haasan.

The following heroines who had paired or appeared in a character equalling the hero's role, had done the great Mother roles with the same heroes in later movies.

With Rajinikanth
Sujatha - in 'Avargal' as wife / in 'Maaveeeran, Baba' as Mother
Lakshmi - in 'Pollathavan' as a friend / in 'Padayappa' as Mother
SriVidya - in 'Apoorva Raagangal' as wife / in 'Thalapathi' as Mother
Sumitra - in 'Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri' as friend-lover / in 'Panakkaran' as mother

Yesteryear Pair, Chiding his son..now
(courtesy: Cinesouth.com)

With Kamal
Sujatha - in 'Kadal Meengal' as wife / in 'Mangamma Sabadam' & few others as Mother
Sumitra - in 'Nizhal Nijaamakirathu' as friend / in 'Singara velan' as Mother
Srividya - in 'Apoorva Raagangal' as lover (of diff. age) / in 'Apoorva Sagothargal' as Mother

Who knows.. some of their other heroines like Ambika, Seetha, Jayachitra, Radhika (who are currently acting as Mom to young heroes) may chide them as their Moms in their forthcoming movies? The reason may be that
- the producers are not able to find actresses senior to the heroes
- these actresses cannot act as the hero's pair anymore (the audience are looking for slim / young faces)
- or the producers may be bored of portraying KR.Vijaya / Manorama / Sujatha / Lakshmi / Srividhya / Sumitra as their Moms.

But, is this trend because of the willingness of the yesteryear young actresses to earn income after their failed marriage life? (like Nalini, Seetha, Sulakshana, Ambika etc.,). May be not...May be they are really offered some good roles, which they couldn't get when they were young heroines. BharathiRaja has to take some credit for this trend. Since he wanted to bring some difference in his characterisation, he asked the young actresses (at that point of time) to act in aged characters. Just recall the following actresses....

Gandhimadhi in 'Mann Vaasanai'
Vadivukkarasi in 'Muthal Mariyathai'
Radhika in 'Kizhaku Seemaiyilae'
Revathi in 'Taaj mahal'
Suhasini in 'Eera Nilam'

But nowadays, the Cable TV channels have saved the lives of several actresses from doing the mother roles to the heroes, with whom they paired earlier. Actresses like Vinodhini, Mounica, Devayani, Sukanya etc., hv got their names into the smallscreen already. So, they may not need the big screen anymore.. Or, the money may lure them at a later stage.. Who knows???

So, you can cross your fingers and wait, to see, if the following heroes will get their yesteryear heroines as Mom in their future movies. (because they will be in this industry for another 10 years acting as young heroes)

Vikram - Rohini ('Thanthu Vitaen Ennai'), Aishwarya ('Meera')
Prashanth - Kaveri ('Vaikasi Poranthachu')
Ajith - Sanghavi ('Amaravathi')
Vijay - Sanghavi ('Rasigan')

3 years back, Saddam Hussein visited The God and asked him: "God, when shall I see the defeat of BUSH?"
God replied: "Son, you will not see it in your lifetime". Hearing this, Saddam Hussein cried and left the place. It happened so.

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-Bian visited The God recently and asked him: "God, when shall I see the peaceful settlement between our land and China?"
God replied: "Son, you will not see it in your lifetime". Hearing this, Mr.Chen Shui-bian was disappointed and left the place.

After the recent election debacle and constant CBI pressure, our great Mr.Laloo Yadav had visited The God and asked him: "Oh God, when shall I see Bihar becoming a prosperous and happy state?"
Hearing this, God started crying. Laloo got astonished and asked him "Why this cyring scene? It seems, God replied: "Son, I will not see it in my lifetime"

Oh....Some miracle, has to happen to make GOD see what Laloo wished for.

The screenplay for the following was structured by me, based on the fragmented one-liners received in the forwards.

Ashwin used to be inquisitive always and made this query to his Dad that day morning, while he was leaving for the office. "Daddy, have you ever been to Egypt?". Dad responded "No, Why do you ask that?". He was speechless and grumbled within himself, when Ashwin asked "Well, where did you get THIS mummy then?"

That day, when he entered the school, he was stopped at the entrance of the class itself. Mdm.Chua asked the reason for his delay. "Because of the sign" replied Ashwin. "What sign?" she asked. Ashwin quipped, "It is because of the sign - which said SCHOOL AHEAD, GO SLOW, Mdm". What else can she do, except to allow him inside??

Next it was the Q&A session for the kids.. with mixed Qs. Ashwin was the last boy, to be asked the remaining questions.

Mdm.Chua: What is the chemical formula for water?
Ashwin: "HIJKLMNO"!!
Mdm.Chua: What are you talking about?
Ashwin: Yesterday you said its H to O!!!
Mdm.Chua: oh..Nooooo...OK.. Now, Ashwin, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?
Ashwin: No Mdm, I don't have to, my mom is a good cook.
Mdm.Chua: grrrrrrrr......Ok, George Washington not only chopped down his father's Cherry tree, but also admitted doing it. Now, do you know why his father didn't punish him?
Ashwin: Because George still had the axe in his hand, Mdm.
Mdm.Chua (gritted her teeth): Ok, now..give me a sentence starting with "I"
Ashwin: I is...
Mdm.Chua: No, Ashwin. Always say, "I am."
Ashwin: All right... "I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

Ashwin could see the fumes coming out of her ears, now. She didn't want to continue there after..So, the last question.

Mdm.Chua: What do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested?
Ashwin: A teacher, Mdm.

She fainted finally..

Oh.. B.E. is it?? - Part-II

*
I never expected that I will be writing a second part for my previous post on this issue.

When I prepared that post on the latest press release of Anna University on Private Engg colleges, the intention was to highlight the administration's enormous number of sanctions & quality issues due to more no. of inefficient colleges. (50% of the total list is like that)

'கிணறு வெட்ட பூதம் கிளம்பிய கதையாய்' ஆகிவிட்டது..இப்பொழுது...(this is nothing but an old tamil proverb "Digging a well for water, resulting in emergence of a demon / ghost....")

In response to that post, I received a mail from an Asst.Professor in a southern city of Tamilnadu (name not revealed, purposely). It seems she was hurt when she read few things, in between the lines. The follwg was the post content, which she referred to...

" know guys who had passed out of some private Engg colleges (from a southern village) after spending 3 lac Rs., and just employed somewhere as lecturers / code writers. This is merely due to lack of quality in most of these colleges. ...........has resulted in inadequate qualified teachers and ultimately poorly qualified graduates."

Ya...When I read that again from her point of view, I felt that she may be true. The first part was her intial response and later portion was her acknowledgement to my reply mail.

But my earlier post was unintentional. I was highlighting the weakness in the system, which definitely allows the colleges to hire unqualified teachers. That doesn't mean that there are no quality teachers. I'm definitely recognising them. But you still have weeds amidst good bunch of crops. Definitely weeding out those teachers is not possible if the granting of permission continues in an increasing numbers. (I don't know whether it is frozen currently).

Her mail, made me to analyse the issue further.....

The aim of the Adminstrator (here, Anna University), before granting permission to many more pvt. engg. colleges, should be:

1) To Chk if the Pvt. Colleges are adequately remunerating the Faculty. Since remuneration is the key factor affecting motivation, it may need correction if required. (I had experience with some of my lecturers who were not motivated. May be the better remuneration may!!! help to solve this problem). Not everybody comes to the education sector with the "students service" motive in mind. Obviously, they also have the normal human desires.

This better remuneration may even attract quality persons into this profession. (I guess, some of the guys working in NIIT may be earning better than some people working in Private Engg. colleges). Let the brain drain not happen in educational sector.

2) To Chk if the Faculty of each & every college has the capability to produce quality students. If not, provide them adequate re-training thru some schemes.

Let them undergo regular tests and routines (I hope it happens) to check their current skill sets. I hope they are up-to-date with the latest technologies. Let those tests & exams be conducted, not only for Promotions. Let them be for quality improvement also. If they fail to prove their updated skills, let them be retrained. Otherwise, we can only see unqualified teachers.. (Sorry, Mdm.K, .....the profsr who sent the above mail).

3) To chk if the Pvt.Engg. Colleges are providing adequate facilities to the Students. I have read in magazines like Junior Vikatan sometime back, that the lab facilities in several colleges are inadequate & pathetic to meet the demand. I believe that the adminstrator would be aware of this fact definitely.

If the Administrator can keep checks for all these problematic issues, several of the students' woes can be answered. Mere releasing of some data (where half of the pvt. colleges' pass rates are less than 50%) is not going to solve the problem. This will just help the aspiring students to avoid those colleges.

The result --- the wound is temporarily healed (by informing students indirectly to avoid those poor colleges) and the root cause is left untreated. This will continue forever, if the approach is not corrected. I hope that the focus of the administrator will change, to provide quality education to aspiring students not only in Guindly Engg College (I mean, Anna University) but also in Pvt. Engg colleges in southern suburbs of TN.

I hope I have not hurt or defamed anybody here, except that I am little bit point blank....BTW, I respect Anna University and this post is only my perception. As I said in my earlier post, perception differs. If at all it reaches someone, who is closer to the administrator, let them take this posting postively......

ha..... pretty long post again, bloggers..

DBI - New agency created...

.
Hi guys, We are formally launching our blog's off-shoot 'Dreamstores Bureau of Information' today, being an auspicious day to start new things & do some good service to the public. (!!!)

Initially, I wanted to name it as 'Investigation' instead of 'Information'. But didn't find it apt, since DBI doesn't do investigation alone. It is a data mining /warehousing agency of the tinsel town (nothing official about it!!!). Hope it serves you with detailed reports, analysis, from time to time.

BTW.. Pl. don't try to click our agent's official picture, given below my profile.. You won't go anywhere else..It is just to keep you informed, that something like this is set up here.

DBI - First field report - Yesteryear Directors

{Pretty long... Better take some energy drink, before starting. Hopefully, you will finish it shortly, if you like to read about tinseltown}

Of late, DBI has received several complaints regarding the directors, who hv gone under the carpet, with a specific request to locate them. The complaints are related to yester-year directors like K.Bhagyaraj, RV.Udayakumar, Pavithran, Vikraman, Athiyamaan, Agathiyan, Thankar Bacchan, Vasanth etc., who are missing from the limelight in the recent years.

Our officials started digging the minefields to unearth these directors..Definitely, these guys hv made atleast one or more memorable movies to their credit. But, where did they go? Is it because, the latest cine audience hv shunned them or are they not able to meet the growing demands of the public?

K.Bhagyaraj - After his memorable movies like Andha 7 Natkal, Mundhanai Mudichhu, Ithu Namma allu, Sundhara Kaandam etc., this script-writer failed to impress the audience with his last movie 'Vettiya Madichu Kattu'. There was a rumour that he even approached a well known theatre owner in Chennai for some financing (information thru a personal friend).

We found out that he is planning to launch his daughter Saranya first (I assume, in a telugu movie), followed by a venture with Cheran (after his long-due 'thavamai thavam irundhu') and another movie to introduce his young son as hero. Let us see, if he can still do the magic to mesmerise today's audience with his kids & cheran.

Bhagyaraj with his wife Poornima

RV.Udhayakumar - This guy who had given some memorable hits like Kizakku Vaasal, Chinna Gounder, Ejamaan & Ponnumani with Ilayaraja's hit numbers, couldn't remain in the limelight when the era of Shankar & similar technicians begun. Eventhough, he made couple of other movies like Urudhi Mozhi,Pudhiya Vaanam,Singara Velan, Nadhavana Theru etc., he failed to impress the audience. He used to write even lyrics for his movie songs..some of which became super-hits.

The promo of his latest movie 'Karka kasadara' which is going around, doesn't impress me that well. The hero Vikrant (vijay's cousin) & Music director Prayog are also not that impressive...Will he survive after this movie? Our team won't bet favourably.... :-( :-(

Pavithran - He is completely out of the scene. DBI failed to locate the whereabouts of this guy, who delivered movies like Sooriyan, Indhu etc., Compare his missing state with his assistant director / friend Shankar, who is miles ahead now. (they were from the same SA.Chandrasekaran's school)

Vikraman - Eventhough our team was not much impressed with his works, he delivered some hits like Pudhu Vasantham, Poovae Unakkaga, Vaanathaip Pola etc., However, he couldn't match up with the pace of his one time assistant KS.Ravikumar, who churned out many commercial hits than Vikraman. After Unnai Thedi / Piriyamana Thozhi debacle, Vikraman had gone to Tollywood. Now he has surfaced in the news circles.. with his about to announce new venture. Let us see, whether his contents are still saleable.

Vikarman - Pretty serious, like his movies, isn't he?

Athiyamaan - The guy who delivered Thotta Sinungi & Swarnamukhi (not super hits), went to Bollywood to fulfill his dreams..the results were nothing but the remakes of his first two tamil movies into 'Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam' & 'Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar'. Now he is back with his Madhavan / Sada starrer 'Priyasakhi'. Can he succeed & bring back the old status for Madhavan? DBI is watching, pretty closely....

Athiyaman with Sada.

Agathiyan - He made a mark in 'Kaathal Kottai', eventhough his earlier/first venture 'Vaanmathi' was an average grosser for Ajith. He proved his ability in his subsequent Prashanth-Isha Gopikar Starrer "Kadhal Kavithai' & Karthik's 'Gokulathil Seethai. Then the big flop 'Vidukathai' came. The Prakashraj-Neena starrer failed Agathiyan miserably. His next venture 'Kathal Samrajyam' produced by Mr.Panchu Arunachalam didn't see the limelight at all..(recall the hit song from YSR 'iru kankal sollum...').

In the meantime he moved to Bollywood, to direct remakes of his initial tamil hits. After staying in the dark for sometime,he came out with 'Ramakrishna' recently and failed again. Now we hv found out that, he is planning to experiment again at his own cost.. with a new movie 'Selvam' with Nandha (of 'Punnagai Poovae' & 'Mounam Pesiyathae') as the lead. This is a make or break movie for this guy.. Will he survive the tides?

Thankar bachchan - The only director in the recent days, from whom the young heroines are trying to flee. Eventhough, he gave some memorable movies like Azhagi, Solla Marandha Kathai and Thendral, his new movie 'Chidambarathil oru Appasamy' is yet to take off (an off-beat comedy). The only problem is none of the young heroines are willing to act in his new venture - a young mother character. Reason, they remember Rathi's fate. (currently sitting in the bench). Will he come out with a commercial hit, amid all these issues?

Bachchan- looking like comedian Dhaamu, isn't he??

Vasanath - This disciple of K.Balachander did some good movies like Keladi Kanmani, Rythm etc., eventhough his other so-called hits like Nee Paadhi Naan Padhi, Aasai, Nerukku Ner didn't impress me that well. His last movie 'Yei Nee Romba Alagaa Irukkae' was a big flop, after which he started concentrating in advt field. Recently there were some news that he is going to direct Surya next. But it turned out to be a baseless rumour, with Surya's denial of the news. Is there any scope for him in the current era? He couldn't tell our team during our phone interview (LOL!!!).

This is only a short list of directors who made it in the last 2 decades, based on which our officials made this report. If you come across some more people, pl. lodge the complaint with our officials. DBI is at your service always:-) :-)

Other directors lik T.Rajender, Parthipan, Pandiyaraajan, Sundar.C, Selva, K.Subash etc., are in action somehow from time-to-time. So, we didn't make any detailed report on them.

Is there any other day to multiply my bank balance???

.
Akshaya Trithiyai

It was an unheard phrase few years back...I mean, from my side. I'm not sure as to how far our blogworld friends (since most of you guys are still unmarried) hv got hands-on experience on this day.

In the recent years, thanks to the fast developing media, the phrase has got the hype as required by the Jewellery shop owners (Read The Hindu article). This day is generally celebrated as "Parasuram Jayanthi", as well as a day to do good deeds (like donations) and buy valuable items like gold, silver etc. Currently the known concept behind this phrase, is to multiply the possession of valuable assets...(you can fill it as 'Gold')

The media explosion thru Cable Tv, has made it possible for the Jewellery shop owners and customers thronging the shops till midnight thru out the state. They are even interviewed for the Primetime news in cable TVs...You can see the beaming faces.

I wonder, whether SUN TV will start making special programmes for this 'Special Akshaya Trithiyai Day' soon. I am sure that, that day is not too far.... Probably, next May-06 you may hv to view special programmes on this day.....

I hv seen the conversion of my hot-cash into jewellery in the last two / three years.. (thank god, my wife came to know about this, only then). BTW...citing those auspicious days' purchase she has increased her range during other months as well. That is another issue......

Hope this year, my wife doesn't convert too much of cash into gold. This year 11th May (tomorrow) is the D-day, targetting my wallet. The concept behind this day is to buy some gold. Hopefully, she buys within a limit... :-( :-(

Now, two questions to the readers, to make this post little more interesting :-) :-)

1) If SUN TV or JAYA TV start telecasting special programmes on this day, can we expect programmes like the oomph girl 'Rahasya's passionate interview on wearing jewels or 'Aishwarya Dhanush's jewellery shopping experience in the 'Vanakkam Thamizhgam' slot?

2) Is there any other auspicious day similar to this 'Akshaya Trithiyai' day, for multiplying my bank balance? I am hard pressed for that day... Pl. share some info. :-( :-(

Can this 'Vallavan' hit the bull's eye again?

.
When 'Manmadhan' won the race finally, due to its story content, I thought this guy is upto something in his subsequent movies. (inspite of his earlier continuous flops like Kathal Azhivathilai, Dham, Alai, Koil, Kuthu etc.,). He didn't cross his limit in 'Manmadhan' and didn't play the larger-than-life role, which allowed him to hit the bull's eye. May be, it was the screenplay which helped him to achieve it.

At this juncture, it became obvious that he has got tired of shunning the director role for so long. Now as everybody is aware, he is given the megaphone for the new movie 'Vallavan', in which he pairs with Nayantara, Sandhya & Reema Sen. The twist is coming now ....

In addition to taking charge of the direction, story, screenplay, he has taken up 4 roles in the movie. (given an interview in the latest Vikatan). As per the interview, he is doing roles of a school student, a college student, an unemployed youth and another mysterious one (unrevealed). He has also assured that all the 3 heroines hv good roles in the script (!!!).

{bear with the picture quality}

I am posting the main content of the interview (in tamil), which compelled me to write this post.

Eventhough, I could appreciate his confidence level in taking up challenges, I didn't like personally the way he delivered the message - I mean, the arrogance. Except Kamalhaasan, who delivers his messages confidently, I hv not seen any young actors talk this way in the recent past. This made me little to analyse the guys who did it earlier in the big screen (3 roles & more).

Only Sivaji & Kamal had scored here for their roles in {Navarathiri, Theiva Magan, Thirisoolam...any more??} & {Michael Madana Kama Rajan}. Satyraj failed to entice the mass miserably, with his 3 roles in 'Villathi Villain'. Ajith is yet to prove, as to whether he can succeed in his 3 roles, in his upcoming 'Godfather'.

Eventhough, few other movies had come out with the actors taking away paychecks for 3 roles, like Kamal in 'Apoorva Sagotharargal ' (his own production), Rajini in 'Moondru Mugam', all the 3 characters didn't feature in the story at the same time.

Now, we need to wait & see if Simbu can really deliver what he is talking. Can he double the success result of 'Manmadhan' in 'Vallavan' also, as he had doubled the no. of characters? A big question mark, to be answered by Simbu...(so called 'Great Simbu' as self-proclaimed by him !!!!)

BTW.. he intends to compose music also for his future movies, like his dad. Hope he plays within a limit while taking up so many roles, which was not followed by his dad TR since the target audience of those years were different from the current scenario.

Read my previous posts as well, relating to the above post (if you hv not read them before)
Dual Role - Is it simply for double pay check?

Prescription at the Clinic

.
During the weekend, happened to visit my family doctor at his clinic. He used to be calm & positive in his approach, being the special qualities required for a physician. After getting some pep talk from him, when I came out .....the display card near his reception area struck me.
